Being single can be a quite a challenge, but it can also be a blessing in disguise. You’re a free person, totally in charge of your life and your happiness. You can go out and meet whoever you like. You can enjoy all the things you probably couldn’t when you were in a relationship, so use this time to explore all possibilities and meet as many people as you can. But how? Where to go? And what do I say?

Here are some ideas:

Start saying “Yes”

Irish Mirror

When you are pushing past 25, you start realising that you just can’t wait for Friday nights; so you can rush home and….. snuggle under your blanket and watch Netflix with a bowl of popcorn. Your friend calls you to have a girl’s night out, and you say, “Nah. Busy” So long as you stay cooped up in your room, you’re deleting every chance of meeting your potential Mr. Right. So start saying yes, at least every other week, go out and have fun, and bump into, you know, humans. You never know where you might knight-in-shining-armour. Say yes to chances. Say yes to opportunities. Say yes to a fun night out!

Go to a bar and hit on someone

Someone is sitting next to you at a bar. Attractive, maybe an 8. How do you strike up a conversation without coming off as desperate? “Hi, here’s my number.” NO. “Nice shirt.” NO. Start with something light and casual, or even quirky. Don’t ask a yes or no question, always ask something that requires an explanation. Make a comment on your drink, the song that’s playing in the background, or recall a funny story. Ask them if they know a good place for supper around the neighbourhood. Look up something new in the menu and ask, “Excuse me, do you know if this is any good?” Smile, and be confident. Even if you don’t end up with someone’s number, you’ve stepped out of your comfort zone, and you’re one step closer. What have you got to lose?

Join interest groups

There are pleeeeeeeenty of interest groups in the Klang Valley that you can join. If you don’t know any of them, head over here to sign up now. These groups are not for specifically for dating, it’s more for people with similar interests. But hey, one person will lead you to another, and another, and you might just find someone you click with. Even if you don’t, you will meet a ton of people, have a ton of fun, and learn a whole lot of new things. Who’s to say you won’t fall for that guy who rescues your quiche in Adult Cooking 101? Or that extremely talented guy dipped you in salsa class? Or that adventurous rock-climbing, muscle-flexing jock? The bottomline is, you get to meet as many people as possible, while doing things you enjoy. So what have you to lose?

Go for stand up comedies

If you don’t already know KL has a very active stand -up comedy scene! People are usually very relaxed at stand up comedies. The laughter, the increase in endorphins, the positivity, they all work in your favour. Hang around after the show, meet some people. Or better yet, you should perform, everyone loves a confident girl who can be goofy. There’s a reason why Robert Pattinson said Tina Fey is his ideal girl (yes, exactly!). Some places, like Crackhouse, for example, opens up their bar after their shows and plays music so people can mingle and have some fun. They also have open mic for newbies, so go sign up!

Go on a blind date

A lot of people are against this idea, but it’s the best way for you to stretch beyond what you’re comfortable with, master the art of how to talk to a complete stranger and learn about the person, while conquering fear and anxiety. You might screw up the first few dates–which is what we want– because after the 7th or 8th date, you will kind of catch on. Over time, talking to men and making a move will not even be a problem anymore. When that right guy finally comes along, you’re fully prepared–and you will score.

Good luck 🙂
