Here are some of the most common foods that cause constipation:
Red meats like mutton and beef are a common favorite among foodies. It tastes good and is high in protein. But one thing you might not know is that cooked meat provides almost zero protein, and it takes more than 90 hours to digest in our body.
Cheese, ice cream, and other dairy products have a reputation of being foods that cause constipation. They are high in saturated fat and low fibres. These are not only contribute to constipation but also increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Greasy, fried foods such as fried chicken, shrimps, calamari and French fries have a tendency to slow down your normal gastrointestinal movement through your digestive tract. Try to choose some other cooking methods like steaming, broiling or small grills.
Caffeine has the potential to dehydrate our body and increase the risk of constipation. We also need to avoid similar drinks such as chocolate, black tea and coffee. If you’re “addicted” to them, try not to over-consume these drinks especially coffee because it may leads to “caffeinism”. Symptoms of caffeinism includes insomnia, increased urination, restlessness and also depression, sometimes even cause migraines.
Sugary treats like cookies, biscuits, pies and cakes are incredibly low in fiber despite being high in fat and sugar. Having large amounts of these treats can lead to chronic constipation, so remember to cut them off your diet when you’re having a hard time in the bathroom.
